Long Islanders Voted Brand New Best Band on Long Island!
Doesn’t it make you proud to rock out with a band from your hometown? Keeping your rock star neighbors on your IPod is even cooler! But who made it to the top of Long Island’s playlists this year? We bring you this year’s winners for Best Band from Long Island on Long Island.
1. Brand New
It’s been an amazing ride for Brand New: from Levittown kids writing killer power-pop tunes to the visionary artists behind 2009’s masterful and diverse Daisy (the best album in a catalog of exceptional albums). Long Island has always been a fertile ground for musicians, but few in the region’s history have gone on to produce such stunning, forward-thinking and explosive results as Brand New. Most bands, after four albums, are slowing down; Brand New, on the other hand, are just hitting their stride. We can’t wait to see what comes next.
2. Gathering Time
Three part vocals mixed with an acoustic, electric and bass guitar. That describes Gathering Time in a nutshell. However, the trio is much more than that. Glen Roethel, Stuart Markus and Hillary Foxsong use incredible harmonies and stage chemistry to make Gathering Time a favorite on Long Island. Their debut CD Songs of Hope and Freedom puts Long Island on the map of the folk music scene.
3. Nine Days
Nine Days is truly a homegrown band that made it big. They began as winners of WBAB’s Home-grown Talent Search and WLIR’s Best Unsigned band and hit national acclaim with Absolutely (Story of a Girl) in 2000. However, the band did not forget its roots. Lead singer John Hampson recently performed at Alure Home Improvements’ pep rally for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Congratulations, Brand New…And, like usual, Brand New doesn’t give a shit. They ask us to vote for them, then they don’t say a word about it when they win. Putting that aside, I really can’t wait to see what they come up with next though – if they come up with anything at all. It’s been pretty much silence from them since their last tour and their future was uncertain even then…
But who knows, right? Maybe they’re just too busy coming up with their next masterpiece to give a shit about some stupid poll. I voted for them every single day because they are, without doubt, the best band to come out of Long Island EVER – despite their seemingly lacking appreciation for their devoted fan base. In all seriousness though, Brand New does deserve the recognition and so much more for all their hard work even if Daisy is the last thing they ever do. Thanks for the music, thanks for the memories, we love you.
At the very least I can take comfort in the fact that my favorite band still has a little integrity left in them. They’re not a bunch of back-stabbing attention whores like some OTHER bands from Long Island.
You Know Who You Are…
Electric Dudes
GOOD RAT’S MAN!!!THE RAT’S ROCK THE HOUSE!AN THEY BLOW THE ROOF OFF!
So all your best bands are out for 10+ years and some that make the best band list are cover bands!? Ha ha where’s William Joel on this list then… silly Island folk: TWO CENT SAM is your best act coming out of your “Old Island” they even rep your “Old Island” but being your music scene is washed out with baby boomers playing the same 18 classic rock songs and three or four radio stations playing the same Classic rock songs for 30+ years this band and other talents of the like have been forced to stick to a real orginal music scene in the Lower east side or Brooklyn because thats where they find support. The next time I’ll have to come out to cover an orginal band on LI I’ll be collecting Social security, If it’s still around that is.
