1. John W. Engeman Theater
250 Main St., Northport. 631-261-2900. www.johnwengemantheater.com
There are many places to see live theater on Long Island, but Northport’s John W. Engeman Theater offers Broadway-level quality at a fraction of the cost, and instead of being in the middle of Times Square, it’s situated in the heart of bucolic downtown Northport. The Theater offered a nice array of classics in 2010—from Guys and Dolls to Cabaret to Damn Yankees to My Fair Lady to The Sound of Music—and their 2011 calendar already boasts Hairspray and Camelot. And the in-seat beverage service, offering cocktails, wine and craft beers, is pretty great, too.
2. Tilles Center
720 Northern Blvd., Greenvale. 516-299-2752. www.tillescenter.org
Each season Tilles Center hosts more than 100 performances. The 2010-2011 seasons marks its 30 year anniversary, and in that time span has hosted the likes Yo-Yo Ma Bill Cosby, James Taylor and the MET Orchestra. It is also home to the Long Island Philharmonic. Located on the scenic campus of Long Island University, this theater is a great place to see a performance.
3. NYCB Theatre @ Westbury
960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury. 877-598-8694. westbury-theatre.com
This theater, formally known as the Westbury Music Fair, is a premier venue with round style seating for 3,000. The majority of the performances are concerts, and artists like Clay Aiken and Miranda Cosgrove are set to come to the venue in the coming year. The theater also features comedians, children’s theater and many other shows for Long Island to enjoy.
