White Post Farms on Old Country Road in Melville is a great way for kids to see exotic animals without leaving Long Island. These animals include antelope, buffalo, ostriches and Grevy Zebras. A Japanese Koi Pond is home to Popeye the Swan, who has been a staple at White Post since 1992. Along with the animals, children can go on a mining adventure, take a pony ride and watch an animatronic singing chickens show.

2. Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park and Zoo

This petting zoo features hundreds of animals, including an 18-foot giraffe, red kangaroos, kinkajous, cougars, Barbados sheep, peacocks, and the only lemurs born and bred on Long Island. They also have various breeds of monkeys, buffalo, colorful parrots, zebra, aoudads, camels, ostrich, alligator, and much more. With the motto “Please Touch,” this park is a perfect place to learn about and experience wildlife.

3. Holtsville Ecology Center

The ecology center is located on a reclaimed landfill, but you would never know it. There are mountain lions, eagles and over 100 injured or non-releasable wild and farm animals that call this place home. For those who want to get up close and personal with the animals, feed is available for goats and ducks.
