My mother was admitted to your hospital 3 times this year in the past two months. This time on March 1, 2011, she had rectal bleeding and diarrhea that was not cure by taking Imodium. She has the diarrhea and bleeding for quite some time (past month).
A GI doctor was called in and he refuse to treat her. His words were that it would make no difference as to whether he located the bleeding source since there would be nothing that can be done about it anyway; since my mom has pancreatic cancer and last year had a mild heart attack. His bedside manners were horrible and we could tell he did not want to be bothered. We were in the emergency room since 830 am yesterday, he was called four times and never showed up or return the call, when my mom was taken to her room, I asked the nurse if she can find out if orders were placed for a procedure for the following day which would of been today, (since my concern was that my mother was not given any solid food to prepare for the procedure – she had breakfast at home before we came to the emergency dept.
At 730 pm yesterday the GI doctor shows up and basically refuse to treat her. He was arrogant and he needs to develop a companionate bedside manner for patients who especially suffer from cancer. He outright told me — he was not ordering any tests nor was he going to do any procedures since she the risks outweigh the benefits. He did not take the time to explain to my mom who is the patient what the risks were or what the benefits would have been. I contacted her oncologist, her cardiologist and her primary doctor and let them know what the GI doctor had said; I requested that another GI doctor be brought in to review my mother’s condition.
The GI doctor that came yesterday should not be practicing at your hospital. If he treated my mother like that, then he will definitely treat another patient the same way.
My mother has been a patient of SNCH for over 16 years and this is the first time that I have encounter a doctor form your hospital to treat a patient with such disrespect and contempt toward her illness.
