The Islanders may dominate our hearts as a team, but only one of them can take home the prize for Best New York Islander (plus a few runners up). Here’s to hoping for a great season. We bring you this year’s winners for Best New York Islander.
Long Islanders voted and Rick DiPietro is the all time New York Islander
1. Rick DiPietro
DiPietro was the No. 1 draft pick overall in 2000, known for his aggressive puck handling skills. He’s been the Islanders’ goal tender for 10 years now and was one of the hot shots named to the United States national hockey team at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics. DiPietro was Team USA’s No. 1 goalie for the tournament, starting four of the team’s six games. DiPietro signed a 15-year, $67.5 million contract with the Islanders, and in 2007, he broke an Islanders franchise record by making 56 saves in a 2-1 shootout loss to the New York Rangers. As of late, DiPietro has suffered quite a few health blows, from illness to injury and can’t seem to get a break. But although he’s been sidelined, we’re sure history will only repeat itself, and he’ll come back in a big way.
2. John Tavares
3. Kyle Okposo
