Best Downtown on Long Island

by Best Of Long Island on December 23, 2010

Manhattan is far away and a bit predictable as a date spot. Your next date should be to the Best Downtown on Long Island. You’ll save travel money and get originality points. We bring you this year’s winners for Best Downtown on Long Island.

Long Islanders Voted Huntington the Best Downtown on Long Island!

1. Huntington
Main St., Huntington. 631-351-3015. www.town.huntington.ny.us.
Suffolk’s lovely and idyllic Huntington is always a Best of L.I. winner. The five-time award-winning downtown has many options for a day or night out on the town. The chic town is quaint and welcoming to visitors, yet has the cool qualities of a city like its neighbor: New York City.

2. Babylon Village
47 W. Main St., Babylon. 631-957-3000. www.babylonvillage.com

3. Farmingdale
361 Main St., Farmingdale. 516-249-0093. www.farmingdalevillage.com

Huntington Village, represent!

It’s truly an oasis surrounded by a desert between NYC and the Hamptons of bland mini-malls with pizzarias and chinese take-outs.

Huntington is very decent and I like it alot . . . but there are other downtowns throughout Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk) that I’ve seen that are more than dismissible and some may be just as good or even better than Huntington Village (though it doesn’t have to be a literal contest; they all compliment one another). Just mentioning those that I’ve seen myself (not bringing up others that I haven’t had a chance to experience yet):

1) Babylon Village (already mentioned above)
2) Bay Shore Village
3) Islip Village
4) Patchogue Village <– THIS MAY BE THE LARGEST, MOST-FEATURE-PACKED DOWNTOWN IN SUFFOLK COUNTY, OR NEARLY SO
(5) Riverhead (Downtown)
(6) Hempstead Village
(7) South Hempstead / Rockville Centre
(8) Long Beach
(9) Hicksville (Downtown)
(10) Roslyn
(11) Great Neck
(12) Westbury Village
(13) Garden City (Downtown) – East Garden City – Mineola – Carle Place <– THE GREATER AREA AROUND OLD COUNTRY ROAD NEAR ROOSEVELT FIELD MALL, THE SOURCE MALL, THE NASSAU COUNTY GOVERNMENTAL COMPLEXES AREA, AND SURROUNDING ENVIRONS
(14) Port Jefferson
(15) Glen Cove
(16) Oceanside
(17) East Islip Village <– NOT TOO DEVELOPED (COMPARED TO HUNGTINGTON VILLAGE) BUT IT IS A DOWNTOWN
(18) Brightwaters <– NOT TOO DEVELOPED (COMPARED TO HUNGTINGTON VILLAGE) BUT IT IS A DOWNTOWN
(19) Montauk Point

DOWNTOWNS with a lower level of development (not quite comparable to Hungtington Village, Patchogue, et al) but are better than nothing: Farmingdale (Downtown Farmingdale/the VIllage, around the greater Main & Conklin St. areas), East Islip Village, Brightwaters, Smithtown Village

I hear that some of the HAMPTONS (Southampton, Easthampton, or wherever) are very well developed (if they weren't, why would all the celebrities and well-to-do go there all the time?).
