This is the second year that 1042 Collision won first place for best auto repair shop after coming in second place in 2008. Originally named for the shop’s address, the family owners later realized that a “10-42” is the New York City Police Department’s radio code for an automobile accident—not that anyone thought it was a reference to the IRS tax form. For those who haven’t needed their services, 1042’s Fulton Street location is most recognizable by the Model T Ford on the roof, which was a gift to the family-run shop from the former restaurant, Jolly Rogers.
