Best LI-Based Website on Long Island

by Best Of Long Island on January 5, 2010

There are literally millions of sites on the web. But a few stand out as the best, and they just happened to be on Long Island.

Long Islanders Voted Newsday.com Best LI-Based Website on Long Island!

Newsday.com
235 Pinelawn Rd.
Melville
631-843-2000
www.newsday.com

Now that the website for LI’s daily newspaper charges for content, they have no choice but to be great. After all, who would pay $5 a week for an online subscription when you can type “Long Island” into Google News and get it for free somewhere else? Newsday has more than a handful of Pulitzer prizes under its belt and a lot of excellent writers whose words deserve to be read, not just on LI but around the world.

2nd Place – News12.com, www.news12.com

News12 covers the news on Long Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Westchester, the Bronx, Hudson Valley, and Brooklyn.  With an extensive area of local coverage, the News12 website is a valuable and well designed resource for local news and broadcasting.  Not to mention, it’s interactive and fun for all ages!

3rd Place – LongIsland.com, www.longisland.com

Longisland.com is one of the best resources for all of your Long Island question and needs. The site features information on automobiles, weddings, and shopping on Long Island as well as basically anything a resident or visitor would need to know.

The Long Island Herald (covers news from communities on Nassau County’s South Shore) has a sleek, new website.

Kudos Newsday! Sounds like sour grapes from LI Press….

Gail, those comments, while tongue-in-cheek, echo what many, many people are saying across the Island and across the country, both inside and outside of the newspaper industry. The point about nobody paying the $5/week to view their site is true. Newsday themselves have stated that only 65 have since they went behind their pay wall in October. As the Press’ current cover story covers in great detail, the grievances against Newsday are far-reaching, and highly internalized. To take the Best Of statement above, and reduce it down to “sour grapes” misses the whole point.

Wow, wasn’t expecting such a negative reply from LI Press? I think you guys missed the whole point… Why do you provide an open forum like this if you are going to shoot down postings from your readers? Evidentally enough people thought highly of newsday.com to vote for it as the best LI-based website.

Gail, we were just pointing out that we had some reasoning behind the comments, certainly not meaning to be “negative” or “shooting down” replies.. More of a spirited debate. Agreed, enough people absolutely thought highly enough of newsday.com to vote them the winner, we simply stated that we felt their great writers and storied history should not be shrouded behind a pay wall. Felt that speaking up on behalf of fellow journalists shouldn’t have been characterized as “sour grapes”, that’s all.

ReUse Long Island July 20, 2010 at 3:05 pm

ReUse.LI is Long Island’s first website dedicated to promoting the awareness, benefits and accessibility of Reused Materials by Uniting like-minded individuals, businesses, and organizations.

Recognizing the importance of Material Reuse is essential in the creation of an environmentally and economically responsible Long Island.

ReUse.LI was created to motivate Long Island to ReThink the way we approach the disposal of our Unnecessary Waste and Unwanted Used Materials. Through the Reduction, Reuse and/or Recycling of these Materials we can divert All Construction Waste, Building Supplies, and Unwanted Used Materials from an already overburdened New York landfill.
