Back in the day, we quit ballet after finding out we had to wear our hair in a bun. We cried and cried and cried—not sure why that was so traumatizing, but at the time it was. Now, every time we come across some form of tulle, we wonder if it is too late to be a ballerina. For us it is, but for all you’re dance-obsessed children, it isn’t. And lucky for them, Long Island has some of the best dance schools for kids.

So, your little one watches shows like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, pirouetting and break dancing in front of the TV? Then Inspirations Dance Academy is just the place to get them started. Many students go on to professional careers, but every one of them has fun. Kids of all ages perform in recitals, compete on dance teams, take classes like break dancing, tap, hip hop, lyrical, jazz, latin, ballroom, and if they aren’t terrified of bobby pins, ballet.
2nd Place – Royalenova Performing Arts, 32 Center Ct., Center Moriches. 631-878-7500. www.royalenova.com
Royalenova is a very professional dance school striving for competitive excellence. They teach “recreational dance” for students 2 ½ through adult and explain their studio strategy as “learn discipline, leadership, and self-confidence—in a personal and friendly, but challenging, environment.”
3rd Place – Ella Marie’s School of Dance, 376 W. Old Country Rd., Hicksville. 516-681-1484.
Ella Marie’s is the dance school for the recreational dancer, and this is not their first year on the list. With rave reviews from parents and students, the staff is well liked, and the kids are learning a lot about the art of dance and becoming dedicated to their craft. Ella Marie’s has also recently renovated to a bigger and better space.
