Best Barbecue on Long Island

by Best Of Long Island on January 6, 2010

For years, Long Island wandered in the BBQ wilderness, having to hit long-gone places like Tony Roma’s for a plate of ribs. Like slow-cooked meat, the LI BBQ developed on its own timetable, taking its sweet time to find the right combination of smoky meats, funky digs and the best vibe.

Long Islanders Voted Smokin’ Al’s in Bay Shore And Massapequa Park The Best Barbecue On Long Island!

Smokin’ Al’s

Now that Long Island is inundated with BBQ joints and even has an annual contest in Sayville, it’s easy to forget the days when we were “cue-less.” Five-time Best of L.I. winner Smokin’ Al Horowitz put an end to that with his ribs, pork and brisket in perfectly nuanced settings. He made BBQ an essential meal for the masses.

2nd Place – Zorn’s. Multiple locations. www.zornschicken.com

In their seventy years of service, they have gained many fans. They have scrumptious wraps and sandwich deals that also come with drinks. Their vegetables are quite fresh and wholesome.

3rd Place – Bobbique. 70 W. Main St., Patchogue. 631-447-7744. www.bobbique.com

Named for his daughter Bobbi, Chef Eric Rifkin has created a nice spot where one can listen to some good blues and sink their teeth into some tender, St. Louis styled ribs. Then, they can enjoy a selection of seventy different beers. What more could you want?

I’M SORRY, BUT I TRIED BOBBIQUES’ TAKE OUT AND THE FOOD WAS HORRIBLE!!! NONE OF US WOULD EAT IT. IT WAS SO BAD MY WIFE EVEN REFUSED TO TAKE THE MEAT OFF THE BONES AND GIVE IT TO THE DOGS. HOW THIS PLACE CAME IN THIRD IS BEYOND ME!

Bobbiques not only has great food, it also has a great atmosphere. I’ve eaten there since it opened and have never been disappointed. The writer who didn’t care for the food is truely the exception–can’t please everyone !!

TO KENNY HAHN:
IT WASN’T THAT I DIDN’T CARE FOR THE FOOD, THE FACT OF THE MATTER WAS THE FOOD WAS INEDIBLE! THE MAC AND CHEESE WAS DRIED OUT AND CRUSTY. THE ORDER OF FRIES CONTAINED SO MUCH GREASE THAT I HAD TO PUT THEM ON A TRAY AND PLACE THEM UNDER THE BROILER TO MAKE THEM EDIBLE AND THE RIBS HAD NO FLAVOR AT ALL. I WILL ADMIT TO THE FACT THAT THEY WERE TENDER.

THE BEST COMPLIMENT I HAVE HEARD ANTONE GIVE THAT PLACE WAS THE THE FOOD WAS “OKAY” I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYONE SAY IT WAS GOOD OR THAT IT “WASN’T BAD”, JUST “OKAY”. I LIVE IN PATCHOGUE SO I’VE SPOKEN TO MANY PEOPLE THAT HAVE EATEN THERE.

ALL IN ALL I WILL NEVER SET FOOT IN BOBBIQUES AGAIN!

The people who voted for Bobbiques obviously disagree with you-I doubt you spoke to any of them-and I’m sure nobody will miss you !!

YOU’RE RIGHT KENNY HAHN, I DID NOT EAT AT BOBBIQUES. IF YOU PAID ATTENTION TO MY FIRST POST I TOOK THE FOOD HOME., AND BOY WAS IT HORRIBLE!!

You either have a grudge or are from a competitors restaurant –and I don’t even believe you ever set foot in the restaurant–to eat in or take out

Mountain, although the ribs are indeed edible, they are sub-par. My wife and I went there and the food was very disappointing and can’t hold a candle to Smokin’ Al’s or Famous Daves.

Bobbique’s is just not that good.

Smokin Al’s is all smoke and mirrors. That is not BBQ. This poll is a joke.

Ya gotta be kidding me. If these are the best then Long Island knows SHITE about BBQ!

Smokin’ Al’s food was so bad I walked out. I’ve never done that in any BBQ joint I’ve ever visited and I’ve been to thousands.

Zorn’s – love the chicken, but it doesn’t serve barbecue! Putting barbecue sauce on anything doesn’t make it barbecue. It’s just oven roasted ribs with barbecue sauce.

Bobbique? great beer – so/so food. Only reason it even gets mentioned in the lack of competition in the area.

And Famous Daves? That’s like saying the Olive Garden is one of Long Island’s top Italian Restaurants.

Wake up folks. Try Swigbellies, Turtle Crossing, The Blue Moon Cafe, Seconds. These folks know what they’re doing. (There may be others out on the Island, but I haven’t been there yet. )

No disrespect to Smokin’ Al’s (which I do like and which I think has the best sides of any Long Island barbecue joint), but for my money (and I’ve spent a lot of it on barbecue) Swingbelly’s has by far the best barbecue on Long Island. The meats are actually cooked in a smoker and have real flavor beyond the sauce. It may be bit of a trek to get to Long Beach, but give Swingbelly’s a try.

If you want to try some awesome BBQ catering (no storefront) give “JC’s BBQ” a shot. JCBBQ.com. I am totally bias as I know the owners, but people have mentioned the Long Island BBQ competitions on this thread and JC’s competition team “Out of the Ashes” has won the last 2 Grand Championships on Long Island. 2010 ‘Williepalooza’ and 2010′ Battle of the BBQ Brethren’ in Holtsville (The Sayville competition moved to Holtsville in 2010. )

JC’s bar-b-que and cateing are the best long island caterers around for a real authentic bbq style meal. They win championship after championship, we follow them around & recently saw them at the “Jack”, the Jack Daniels world invitional bbq championship! Gotta love that NY BBQ!!!! You mus call or visit their website, the bbq ALL YEAR LONG!!!! GO JC’S! http://www.jcbbq.com of 631-630-6242.

Bobbique is totally not real Barbque food. Its actually quite bad! Fatty Beltbuckle was great but Smokin Al’s has this genre locked up. Virgils in Manhattan is the best in the Country.

‘May be biased but we’ve got some real competition in taste waiting for you at the Maple Tree on West Main in Riverhead. Stop in and try authentic slow cook BBQ! Just sayin’!

I have no idea how Ben considers himself an expert, but Fatty Beltbuckles was horrible. Both locations. Atrocious. They wouldn’t know true BBQ if it slapped them in the face.

Virgils is underrated, but certainly not the best in the city. If you want the best in the city, try RUB, Hill Country or Daisy May’s.

Smokin’ Al’s is a bar with BBQ themed food. Zorns doesn’t serve BBQ. Bobbique isn’t bad, but isn’t great.

Thankfully, both RUB and Swingbelly’s are opening up second locations on Long Island.

Zorns is the worst food ever. It is dirty and I’ve been in there when Mr, Zorn was sticking his finger in the sides and licking it
