Best Burger on Long Island

by Best Of Long Island on January 5, 2010

Like all Americans, we on Long Island just can’t seem to get enough of the ground beef patty in all sizes and quality. A raft of local burger spots have opened in the last year but the classic burgers, and the best, endure.

Long Islanders Voted All-American Drive-In In Massapequa The Best Burger On Long Island!

All American Drive-In
4286 Merrick Rd.
Massapequa
516-798-9574
www.allamericanhamburger.us

In a category that could rightly be divided into 10 sub-categories, the nostalgic voters make the cool throwback, the Double Double burger, a favorite against national chains and other local heroes. Maybe they’re rebelling against the emergence of the burger as haute cuisine. After all, doesn’t a burger taste better served from a stand, wrapped in paper and gobbled while leaning on the hood of a car?

2nd Place – Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Multiple locations. www.fiveguys.com

A major chain throughout New York and Long Island, Five Guys Burgers and Fries is one of the best places you can go for a hamburger. You get to choose what toppings you can get for your regular double patty burger or “little” single patty burger. Each hamburger is cooked with top quality meat and is extremely satisfying.

3rd Place – Cheeburger Cheeburger. 228 Airport Plaza Blvd., Farmingdale. 631-393-6150. 12 Manetto Hill Mall, Plainview. 516-939-2237. www.cheeburger.com

With an old school styled diner atmosphere, Cheeburger Cheeburger serves nothing but top quality burgers. Cheeburger Cheeburger gives eaters a large variety of different toppings they can put on their burger.

I have a fond, sentimental view of All-American, having gone there as a kid, but really, the burgers are nothing special. And Five Guys? Sure, if I want a place where the meat has been cooked to where it has no more taste, Five Guys would come right to mind.
No Burger Nine Point Five? Come on.

I completely agree. Burger Nine Point Five is AMAZING!

These lists are obviously made to agree with popularity rather than taste. everyone knows that although all american is nolstagic it is far from the best burger on long island. please lets give credit where credit is due. They shouldn’t base these lists on a popularity contest. Real foodies knows where the good stuff is and that a lot of the places on this list is bs. I vote burger bite in west hempstead and American burger in rvc

DUDES AND DUDETTES….. WHEN YOU ARE ASKED ABOUT “THE BEST” BURGERS ON LONG ISLAND LETS NOT CONFUSE THE ISSUE WITH THE OLDEST OR MOST NOSTALGIC PLACES YOU VISITED AS A KID ETC….CAUSE MICKEY DEE’S AMERICAM, CHEESEBURGER, ETC ETC MEAN NOTHING AS FAR AS TASTE IS CONCERNED FOR THOS EOF YOU WHO REALLY LOVE GROUNG SIRLOIN BURGERS THAT ARE NOTHING LESS THEN TOP QUALITY GROUND BEEF(STEAKS) HANDS DOWN TO “THE TERRACE DINER” JUST OFF SUNRISE HWY…NEAR TATTO LOU’S ON THE NORTH SERVICE ROAD EXIT OFF BELMONT/LITTLE EAST NECK ROAD WEST BABYLON…. I BOUGHT THE PLAIN OLD BURGER, NO FRILLS NO FRIES FOR LIKE 6.00 AND GOT IT MEDIUM WELL….IT WAS HUGE GOOD PRICED AND DELICIOUS!!!!!
NOW IF YOU WANT GOOD IN A BURGER JOINT THEN YOU NEED TO TRAVEL WESTWARD TO LIKE CALI/VEGAS/ETC AND GO TO “IN AN OUT” BURGER….GET THE MONSTER BURGER IT IS EQUALLY GOOD AND CHEAPER….BURGER JUICE DRIPPING OFF THE WRAPPER FRIED ONIONS TO DIE FOR…NOT GOOD FOR THE FAINT AT HEART, OF COURSE TOP IT ALL OFF WITH A MALT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best is All American hands down. Besides the nostalgia…the burgers and fries are excellent quality. If you went by nostalgia alone, then you could say that Slo Jacks in Hampton Bays was good. But they are not. Their burgers suck. But the building is sooooo nostalgic

All American has the best. Go with the double cheese…..

I agree with Scott, I’m surprised Burger 9 Point 5 didn’t make the list, let alone be #1. We go once a week just to get those juicy, delicious burgers, not to mention the beer battered onion rings, one of the most amazing bowls of chili out there, the cheese square-thingy’s, etc… all with great service from Nee, Jodi and staff!
I recommend, very highly, that you should try Burger 9 Point 5 in Merrick. Go! Now!

Out of the Park Burgers should be in the top burger category! It is right near ducks stadium and is definitely worth it. Plus, the fries are made from fresh sliced potatoes. The meat is fresh, not frozen. The taste from fresh products can never be compared to any other place that uses frozen products! And they even have a great eating challenge, (Man vs. Food would be proud of this one!) OUT OF THE PARK BURGERS in Central Islip by Ducks Stadium, (Home Depot/Target Shopping Center). Definitely #1 !!!!!!!!!

Best burger place is American Burger in Rockville Centre (Long Island), they have tons of toppings and Burgers to choose from. Burgers are fresh and juicy and the size and price is reasonable. It sort of like an old time joint, tons of pics on the walls, memrobiles although only a few tables.

Best burgers!!!!!!!

I don’t understand why people think that All American or Five Guys are that great. I have had both multiple times to give them a shot and I don’t think that either of them are all that great. They are probably a better choice than going to Burger King or w/e but they are far from being the best.

If a burger place refuses to cook done-ness to order, ala 5 Guys or Cheeburger, why bother? That should tell you all you need to know.

Fearing lawsuits when they can’t handle their meat properly, these corporate, soulless entities have decided to burn the heck out of them and count on the flavor from seasonings and toppings, not the meat.

I won’t bother unless they’ll do medium rare – and many, many don’t. Again, that should tell you all you need to know about their confidence in their meat source, storing and cooking processes.

You said it all. Nostalgia is great for conversation, museums and collectors. The best Burger should be about qaulity, flavor and skill. Looking forward to a good suggestion. BTW 5GUYS and All American are great for those that don’t know better.

Upper Crust at 990 Franklin Ave has the best burger on Long Island. Five Guys is ok, but Upper Crust is better meat, and best bun you’ll ever have.

I love to see the All American haters here. They would not be around for 40+ years if their burgers sucked. As for 5 Guys, ugh. The burger was ok but I don’t feel like taking out a second mortgage for lunch. That and I really don’t care for my bag being a greasy mess and fries all over the place. If you want to give out extra fries then put them in bigger cups. It was a major turnoff and I will never go there again.

how else are you going to get a NUMBER 1 without having a place where genrally speaking evryone goes to . All American Hamburger wins becasue its good fast food good price good everything. If your gonna have a contest that has the best tasting burger . A kobe beef burger would probebly win, but thats no what were here for.

Exaggerate much, Jack? Saying a place is not so great isn’t an expression of hatred. No one said that All American’s burgers “sucked”; the worst was said was that they aren’t special. And that’s enough to keep them around as long as they have been; in food service, longevity isn’t an indicator of quality and vice versa.

Having spent all 33 yrs of my life living in Massapequa, I have to admit I am a staunch defender of All American. I feel that between price, taste, fresh ingredients, and of course nostalgia, it is deservedly at the top of this list. If you are going for a quality bar or restaurant style burger, of course the “Double Double” won’t hold up. My choice in that category would be a burger from “The Good Life” in Masssapequa Park. I’m a burger fan and have had burgers all around the island and the country. Right now, this is my absolute favorite.

Another great burger in Massapequa is Paddys Loft on Hicksville Rd, just north of Jerusalem Ave.

I do have to admit that every time I ever ate at Paddy’s Loft, the food was good. That was years ago however, as I refuse to step foot in the place. The owner, Noel, is a snake and a crook. I wouldn’t eat there now if I were starving to death. I will give you a hint my friend, look over your check carefully for any discrepencies before paying it. Better yet, avoid that place and it’s thief owner all together.

All American is cheap and quick and I do like it, but it’s not even close to being a really good burger. It’s really just a glorified McDonalds.

check out the burgers at public house55 , hand packed fresh ground 10 oz burgers on kaiser rolls , choose reg fries, or sweet fires, cheese, bacon, sauteed or crispy onions, mushrooms, or if available ask if you can have the bull burger or the chefs special burger stuffed with BBQ pulled pork ( made in House) .

The best burgers are from All American in Massapequa and an old time favorite The Helm in Freeport! They have the best tasting burgers around.

Reply

Scott April 21, 2011 at 5:29 pm

Again, what’s the big deal about All American burgers? They’re just fast food-style burgers bought from a wholesale distributer that supplies tons of other places.

In all honesty, Five Guys goes with direct-provider meats and fries. If you tell them to cook a certain way (I go with medium rare), they will do it. As far as consistency, for a burger “chain” to put these specialty burger places on alert, Five Guys has to be the best, plus the people are actually friendly there at any location I’ve gone to (all over Long Island and in Manhattan). All American is just a poor excuse for “nostalgia.” A bunch of thankless, snot-nosed kids and older people who look at you like you’re a problem is not my idea of starting an experience off well. Then you get a burger that is sagging, and tastes one of two ways: completely raw or stale and rotting. The fries are fantastic at All American though. I think the writer of this article is pandering to the audience and should work for MSNBC is that’s the sort of thing he likes.
