Best Deli on Long Island

by Best Of Long Island on January 5, 2010

Yes, on Long Island, there is a deli on every street. Well, it sure seems like it. But there’s a big difference between your run-of-the-mill coffee-and-smokes deli and the very best delicatessen.

Long Islanders Voted Iavarone Bros. The Best Delicatessen On Long Island!

With delicatessens on pretty much every other corner across Long Island, any deli that’s voted first place in the Best Delicatessen category has to be pretty damn phenomenal. Iavarone Bros. fits this description and more. A mega supermarket-deli-butcher-cheese shop-pasta-seafood smorgasbord, Iavarone Bros. is the place to go for everything from everyday cold cuts to gourmet specialties. But don’t be misled—Iavarone Bros. retains all the intimacy, sights, aromas and quality freshness of an Italian open-air marketplace. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. And its food just cannot be beat.

2nd Place – Gemelli Fine Foods. 115 E. Main St., Babylon. 631-321-4515. www.gemellis.com

For a deli with a great menu and sandwiches made from the freshest and finest ingredients, go to Gemelli’s Fine Foods. Not only are they the makers of fine sandwiches, they also make homemade pasta and sauce, brick oven breads, pastries and desserts.

3rd Place – Seaqua Deli. 4250 Jerusalem Ave., Massapequa. 516-799-5600. www.seaquadeli.com

For everything from breakfast to dessert go to Seaqua Deli. They have a large menu with delicious foods that you can either eat there or take home to devour. They cater and make delicious party platters as well to help serve all of their customers needs.

Seaqua deli is the only real delicatessen up there. The others are Italian Gourmet Food Marts. I consider Ivarone more of a Market then a deli. I have been a customer of Seaqua Deli all my life and I am also a fan of Ivarone Bros. I go to both for two completely different reasons. I have never even heard of anyone going to Ivarone for a sandwich.

Seaqua does not always get the order wrong. I’ve been a customer there for 19 years and I’ve never ever recieved something that I did not order. They might be a little expensive, but it’s totally worth it. They don’t give you a skimpy sandwich EVER! That is why Seaqua made it to the top 3 and NOT Ben’s deli.

I was actually hoping to find a good deli listed on here, but I have to agree with Ashley about some of these places being food markets, not traditional delis.

I moved from Valley Stream to WI in 1982. The only thing I miss is NY Pizza and the local delis. We are starting to get NY Pizza in WI, but no delis. I was visiting my Dad at Franklin General Hospital, and jumped onto a little deli to grab something for breakfast. I was surprised that they had a grill in there and I got a delicious egg and cheese sandwich on a fresh roll for $2.59. You would never get that in Midwest. You either go to a fast food chain, for same-old, same-old or a full service restaurant.
For years I have told Pizza men out here that the midwest is a land of opportunity and they pooh-poohed me. Now guys are getting rich. Polito’s opened a NY Pizza place in Steven’s Point, WI and now he has 4 locations in Oshkosh, Wausau, and Menominee WI.
Any one who has the knowledge how to run a good deli/hero shop could get rich in WI. If you want to live a simpler, less congested life, and want to learn about cities in WI, email me at taub@scacable.com . Don’t worry we have better electricity, plumbing and everything in Midwest now!
