Four-time winners in this category and deservedly so, the folks at Krisch’s specialize in creamy homemade ice cream, made just like they did in 1955 when they moved here from Queens. The varieties are endless and the authentic ’50s atmosphere with cozy booths and a long counter make this a destination all year round.
2nd Place – Herrell’s Ice Cream, 46 Gerard St., #L. Huntington. 631-673-1100.
Herrell’s Ice Cream has a chain of colorful ice cream with a brand of over 200 flavors of high quality, fresh, hand-made ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet right in the store. They are also known for their famous decadent and delicious hot fudge sauce which is made in small batches from scratch. Yum-my!!
3rd Place - Coyle’s, 75 Howells Rd., Bay Shore. 631-666-2229.
Step inside this old-fashioned ice cream parlor and enjoy the taste of fresh ice cream. They have a variety of shakes, malts, waffle cones, sundaes, and egg creams. You name it; you’ll almost surely find it.

I’ll give you Herrells, but the top three places on LI could only include Magic Fountain (Mattituck) and In the Mood (Woodbury).
If you haven’t tried Herrell’s, go down to Huntington Village and give it a shot. You’ll taste that good old fashion creamy texture in their ice cream, not to mention that smooth chocolate fudge flavor in their hot fudge. Worth the trip.
We were out with friends in Huntington Village and they took us to Herrell’s Ice Cream. It was great. Smooth and creamy taste, like the old ice cream shops. And they don’t skimp on toppings either. Give them a try, I know you’ll be back.

To whom were you addressing the reply? I’d stated that I would accept Herrell’s on the list. Still, my top three would likely be In the Mood, Magic Fountain, and International Delight in Rockville Center/Bellmore; I’m not sure if or where I’d put Herrells in there; it would pain me to remove on of my three, though I can’t definitely state I would not put Herrells in that ranking.
Since Queens is part of Long Island, at least the last time I looked on a map, you must include Eddie’s Sweet Shop on Metropilitan Avenue in Forest Hills.
My favorite is Herrell’s in Huntington Village. The best hot fudge sunday anywhere.
I grew up in Massapequa and absolutely, is Krisch’s the best! I now live in the midwest and nowhere have I found a decent ice cream shop.
I’ve been to Herrell’s and to Krisch’s and they can’t top Coyles!
Creamy smooooooooth, the best. While you’re there check out
the very lovely Janice behind the counter!
Coyle’s in Bayshore & Islip has the best home made ice cream! Can’t imagine better!
Coyles is really the top “GUY” for flavors, creamist and body, you really know that you have now tasted the best. This is # !

OK, I’ll try Coyles. Which location has “the lovely janice?”
I picked some chocolate variant at Coyles the other day, and it had a strange off-flavor. Not sure what it was. I’ve been there a few times before and didn’t have problems, so maybe this was a fluke.
IT’S COYLES FOR ME… GRANDKIDS LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT
I think everyone that votes on these things is from Massapequa. I am from Massapequa and while Krish’s is OK I am sure there is better (that said – they do have good whipped cream), looking forward to trying the others on the list. Hilldebrand’s in Williston Park is good too, and I’m with Joseph C- Eddie’s sweet shop is yummy!!!!!
I’ve seen Fra Amici listed as best in Italian- sometimes the takeout from there is downright inedible. Not sure I trust this list for the best of anything
I am trying to find a place on Long Island that sells Black Licorice Ice Cream…. So far nothing.
Definately Marvel in Lido!! Best ice cream right by the best nicest family operation….
