Best Pizza on Long Island

by Best Of Long Island on January 5, 2010

There is definitely no shortage of good pizza on Long Island. These are the best of the best.

Long Islanders Voted The Original Umberto’s of New Hyde Park Best Pizza on Long Island!

The Original Umberto’s of New Hyde Park
Multiple locations
www.originalumbertos.com

Pizza scholars only recently traced the origins of Grandma pizza, a Long Island innovation, to a pizza maker at Umberto’s in New Hyde Park. But Long Islanders didn’t need an expert to know that for 45 years this has been the place for ethereal Sicilian pizza, well-charred on the bottom with a perfect balance of sauce and good cheese.

2nd Place – Little Vincent’s Pizza, 329 New York Ave., Huntington. 631-423-9620. 324 Smithtown Blvd., Lake Ronkonkoma. 631-981-9631.

Little Vincent’s Pizza truly is proof that good things come in small packages. This little store located down route 110 in Huntington has that classic New York City pizza taste and is beloved in the local area. With a wide variety of toppings, Little Vincent’s Pizza is one of the best places to grab a slice.

3rd Place - Gino’s Pizzeria and Ristorante of Williston Park, 628 Willis Ave., Williston Park. 516-746-2860.

Gino’s Pizzeria & Restaurant in Williston Park is one of the top pizzerias on Long Island. Crispy crust, fresh cheeses and delicious sauces are all used to make Gino’s a Williston favorite. Gino also has other tasty Italian items on its menu but almost anyone who goes there goes for their incredible pizza.

I’m at the International Pizza Expo now in Las Vegas. I’ve eaten A LOT of pizza so far, and none has come close to my personal favorite…LaScala in Commack.

Gino’s (Williston Park) has the best regular pizza. Although I don’t like Sicilian pizza I have bought theirs for people to try because I know how those that like it love Gino’s. I think it’s made with Parmesan as opposed to being just some huge thick pizza like most places. For those that said Mama Theresa’s – they make some excellent meals, but I don’t care for their pizza.

Phill’s Pizza in Syosset, The other places are good but Phill’s should be tried. You’ll see that Phill’s is just as good.

Umberto’s cannot be beaten – try the brick oven margherita pie, it’s divine. Or the thick crust Neapolitan they call “pazzo pizza”. It has home made sausage, olives, & roasted red peppers. Very very good.

Umbertos is by far the best pizza I have had anywhere. They are famous for their Grandma but I love their regular slices. Perfect in every way. Can’t visit my parents on LI without making a stop there!

Reply

Pizza guy October 7, 2010 at 2:06 pm

If you think umbertos is the best pizza anywhere…then you either have a horrible palate, or you haven’t been anywhere. Pizza on LI sucks. I know I live here. Take a trip to Howard beach and go to new park pizza. Forget visiting your parents and just go for the pizza. That’s for starters. If you get pizza in Brooklyn or manhattan you’ll never get a slice on LI again.

Reply

John E January 10, 2011 at 10:34 pm

There’s a lot of bad pizza in Brooklyn and Manhattan too…not just on Long Island. Which is amazing – because making pizza isn’t rocket science if there is a simple commitment to quality ingredients. That said, hardly anybody has that commitment. Those who do generally have a line out the door for their stuff.

Sal’s Pizza in Rockville Centre. For 50 + years, the best slice on Long Island. Had a bit of a stumble a year ago re: consistency but now is back better than ever!

We doubt if anyone has eaten at EVERY pizzeria on Long Island, and we all have our local favorites. The original Umberto’s on Jericho Tpke. in New Hyde Park is our favorite for Sicilian and Grandma’s; we recently discovered that they make a very good (if less than authentic) Margherita.

For a straight-up NY-style slice, Colloseo in Pt. Jeff Station is excellent. If we could get round from Colloseo and square from Umberto’s at the same time, we’d be in pizza paradise!

If you want to see what we really think, here’s our L.I. pizza page: http://www.passion-4-pizza.com/long_island_pizza.html

Pizza-Loving Painter August 14, 2010 at 1:16 pm

As a painter, I worked all over Long Island and tried pizza everywhere I worked. The best pizza I ever tasted was a small place called Roma’s in Garden City. The slices had perfect smoked crust, tomato sauce that tasted like the tomatoes were just picked from the vine and amazing cheese on top. Unfortunately, they went out of business and were taken over by Umberto’s, which is the most overrated pizza on the Island. Umberto’s makes good pizza but it just doesn’t blow me away the way most people describe it. I think the 2 best pizzerias right now are La Piazza in Merrick and La Pizzetta in East Norwich. La Piazza makes amazing grandma pizzas and their regular slices are just as good. La Pizzetta is a great place to go to if you take your kids to the pumpkin farms up in Brookville on Northern Boulevard and want to get some good grub afterwards. La Pizzetta is a good family restaurant where in addition to the great pizza, I like to get mozzarella and tomato salad for appetizers and finish with their delicious chicken francese. I’m lucky if I get to visit these 2 pizzerias more than once or twice a year because I live in Queens and they’re quite a distance from where I live but if you ever want to try great pizza or Italian food check out these 2 places because they make you appreciate what real pizza should taste like.

The mozzerella is low grade. The sauce is low grade. I have been to every pizza on the Avenue and gave up. I now buy my pizza in Massapequa or elsewhere.

I’ve tried The Original Umberto’s of New Hyde Park and Little Vincent’s Pizza numerous times. But in my opinion, they can’t hold a candle to Joe’s Pizza Montauk Hwy. in Copiague. Especially the Taco Pizza (my favorite).

I personally would have to say Frantonis pizzeria and restaurantε in East meadow. They have a wonderful selection with well over twenty pies not including their rolls and pinwheels, My favorite slices would have to be the Chicken Caesar slice, UPSIDE DOWN SICILIAN slice(My favorite!), and the Rigatoni Alla Vodka slice. DEFINITELY a must try!

You have to be nuts. Tony’s Pizza is the best ever. You can find Tony’s in all supermarkets in the frozen food section. Sometimes when you take the Pizza out of the carton you may find ice all over it, I think that is the secret ingredient water. Pre heat over to 800 degrees, place Pizza on oven rack, when the cheese melts, flip it over until you see the crust start to turn kinda black, pull it out and bingo you have an upside down Pizza. The only way to eat Pizza—-> TONY’s

OK: top 5- 1) The Pie in Port Jeff 2)Little Vincents in Ronkokoma, 3)Colesso in Port Jefferson, 4) Emilio’s in Commack 5) Matts in Coram. You can go to any pizza place one day and love it and then go back the next day and it can be slightly different the next day depending on the person making it. There is not a true #1 pizzaria on LI but lets just all thank god that we can go just around the corner and get a great snack in any town. The beauty is on the tongue of the beholder.

What is the difference between Umberto’s on Jericho Turnpike in NHP & King Umberto’s on Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont?

Seriously, has anybody tried LoPiccolo’s Pizzeria in Hauppuage? One of the best slices I’ve had in a long time. Crispy and delicious. The Grandma is even better. So fresh and full of flavor. It must be something in the dough because the crust is just amazing. Their display had about 25 different specialty pizza’s that all looked amazing. I’ve tried most of them and their awesome. Can’t wait to try them all!!!

Umberto’s of New Hyde Park is the original. They sold King Umberto’s to the current owners in the 70s. Umberto’s is definitely the best pizza on Long Island. I’ve tried every pizzeria I possibly could and there are other great pizzerias but Umberto’s takes the cake. Their prices are high but that’s because they use the most expensive ingredients to make an awesome pie. The small Umberto’s in Garden City on Nassau Blvd I recently found is excellent. The same great taste as the original and the service is so much better and quicker!

Now that I live in Florida, I would just say all NY pizza is delicious, it is so hard to find a good Pizza place here, they say it is the water but whatever, I am frustrated and that goes for bagels too, it’s getting better though.
