Best Vegetarian Restaurant on Long Island

by Best Of Long Island on January 5, 2010

It’s hard enough to find a vegetarian restaurant as it is. Non-meat eaters shouldn’t be forced to be subpar food to boot. Nothing but the best Vegetarian Restaurant on Long Island for our herbivore friends.

Tiger Lily Café in Port Jefferson Won Best Vegetarian Restaurant on Long Island!

Tiger Lily Café
156 E. Main St.
Port Jefferson
631-476-7080

Even though they offer some meat on the menu, Tiger Lily Café is a consistent winner in the eyes of vegetarians. Voted No. 1 for a fifth year because of the total arty experience it provides, it may look like a casual sandwich and juice bar with a certain ’60s style and West Coast vibe that flavors the smoothies and tofu-infused offerings. But Port Jefferson just wouldn’t be the same without it. Grab a strong cup of joe or a light cup of Chai, sample flavorful tofu and tempeh renditions or tuck into a turkey breast wrap better than you could’ve ever imagined.

2nd Place -Tula Kitchen, 41 E. Main St., Bay Shore. 631-539-7183. www.tulakitchen.com

As soon as you enter this restaurant there’s warmth and everyone is very welcoming.  With up to nine options of salads, you can choose whatever your heart desires.  Have a grilled shrimp salad with bleu cheese, toasted almonds, pear crisps, and baby spinach with lemon vinaigrette.  As a main course try the fusilli bowl of fire roasted vegetables, grilled chicken, smashed garlic and shaved parmegiano.  You can even have an alternative of a feta burgers or baked fresh salmon cakes.

3rd Place - Green Melody, 519 N. Broadway., Jericho. 516-681-5715. http://www.yelp.com/biz/green-melody-jericho

You do not to be a vegetarian to love this place.  It serves fantastic food with general tso’s chicken, not too much sauce, brown rice, spring rolls, stir fried veggies, mango chicken, shrimp dish, sweet potato fries, seasame chicken, wonton soup, chicken rolls, roast duck, and more.  With fast service and a great staff this is the place to go.

I would add an all vegetarian restaurant to the top 2: House of Dosas in Hicksville.

I’ve found Green Melody to be hit-or-miss; had something great one time, couldn’t finish the plate another. Good enough a third.

But House of Dosas? I’ll third that. Never had anything less than a thoroughly enjoyable meal there.

Green Melody has been closed since August ’10. I’m suddenly not so impressed with this list.

To be fair, these are the 2010 winners, so that Green Melody closed mid-way through the year doesn’t itself invalidate it.
