Best Local Charity

by Best Of Long Island on January 5, 2010

Long Island has many charities to be proud of. From building houses to collecting food, there is no shortage of helping hands in these parts. But that doesn’t mean they don’t still need volunteers. Here are a few to consider:

Long Islanders Voted LI Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge the Best Local Charity on Long Island!

LI Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank is Long Island’s first food bank. Founded in 1980 by late singer-songwriter and social activist Harry Chapin, the organization provides nutritional food and support services for a network of more than 540 community-based member agencies. While the annual distribution of nearly 6 million pounds of food is at the heart of Long Island Cares’ operations, they are more than just a food bank. LI Cares offers an array of programs and services including hunger education, job training, supplemental food programs for children, school supplies, job development, legislative advocacy, and a triage food pantry. Pretty impressive, eh?

2nd Place - Island Harvest, 199 Second St., Mineola. 516-294-8528. www.islandharvest.org

Island Harvest is the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island. By relying on volunteers, in-kind services, and donated food, they devote 97 cents of every dollar contributed directly to their programs.  They conduct educational programs to increase hunger awareness and inform the public how they can get involved in their mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.

3rd Place - Habitat for Humanity 643 Middle Country Rd., Middle Island. 631-924-4966. www.habitatsuffolk.org

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk is an independently operated affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. They are a non-profit, ecumenical Christian partnership.  They are concerned people that build and sell affordable homes to hardworking low-income families.  They all work together to give Habitat families a “hand up” not a “handout” because everyone deserves a simple, decent, and affordable place to live.
