whoever the hater is needs to get his facts and head on straight because there are no late fish weighed in at the duke of fluke and there has got to be at least 1 fish caught on a spearing or a bunker chunk this year so the statement that every fish is caught on a terminator is simply false ;-) Congratulations Bill and Denise you deserve it and i’m just glad i could be a part of it.

I completely disagree with the poster “Ed Walsh”. This whole contest is voted ‘by the readers’ of LI Press. If they’re so terrible, why did they win News Channel 12′s best bait shop last year?

You say Bill is a salesman? That guy has been fishing these waters for fifty years and behind the counter for more than twenty- I don’t know anyone with more knowledge about the bay. Bill is passionate about fishing and dedicated to his doing right by his customers. Talk to him for five minutes and see if his enthusiasm about the sport isn’t contagious. Whether you’re a newbie or seasoned pro, he whips out his little map, shows you where they’re biting and where the hotspots are and sends you off on your way with helpful little bits of info. There’s nothing ‘sales-y’ about that!

They treat their staff like garbage? Then why do the kids stay working there for 15 years at a time?Rob worked there from the time he was a teenager right up until he got married! And the current kids, Ben and Keith, have been there for a decade and 5 or 6 years respectively. That whole staff is like a big family, those kids are like sons to Bill.

And for their tournament, that event draws hundreds of people every year and Bill is VERY strict about sticking to regulations. This year a guy threw a FIT when he was 3 minutes past five and got turned away. (They weigh in well past 5:00 but the line is always cut off by 5:00. Clearly you’re confused.) The judges are officials sent over from the Fisherman to make sure everything is on the up and up. And when there was a question about the legitamacy of one of the weighed fish- Bill had a biology teacher cut open the fish in front of everyone to ‘check its authenticity’. I’ve done the tourney almost every year since the beginning- they get donations from the community, give out generous prizes, feed everyone and its like a big party. I think after 15 years of successful tourneys and the wildly increasing number of participants, you should give it a little bit more credit.

Shame on you for taking cheap shots at these hardworking people. I am a longtime customer and I consider Bill a friend. At a time when mom and pop shops are hurting, or people are running off to the big box retailers like Wal-Mart, these guys have really stepped up their game and outlasted the so-called ‘competition’.

And as for your criticism that “all the big fish are caught on the same thing, a terminator”, that sounds like proof positive that it works. Stop by the shop- I’m sure Bill would be happy to educate you about why its not just “a fancy lure”. The results speak for themselves.

Sounds like you are a disgruntled owner of one of the bait shops that didn’t make the cut. Sorry, better luck next year =)
