John Tavares Long Island's Favorite Islander!

Sixteen goals. Twelve assists. No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2009 NHL draft. Nineteen years old. If there’s one thing to look forward to as an Islanders fan, it’s seeing center John Tavares blossom at the head of the team’s offensive attack. And there’s a good chance he’ll emerge as one of the greats—he broke Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals scored by a 16-year-old in the Ontario Hockey League. With two and a half years on his contract—and did we mention he’s 19?—there’s a great chance Tavares could be the face of the Islanders as the team heads into the new decade.

2nd Place - Rick DiPietro

DiPietro was drafted in 2000 by the Islanders. Rick played goalie for seven years after which he underwent knee surgery, and returned to the team just in time to start their 08-09 season but sadly, he didn’t finish. In November of 2007, DiPietro got his 100th NHL career win against the Rangers winning 2-1. Dipietro has always been an Isles favorite and also a favorite to Long Islanders. He is known to be charitable to children and fans and will always  be an Island favorite, coming in at number two on this year’s list, we hope to see him back on the ice next season.

3rd Place – Kyle Okposo

Okposo is only twenty two and, is a proud Islander. This year he was even chosen to help lead team USA! Drafted by the Isles in 2006, Kyle is already an alternate captain of the hockey team. Kyle has received many awards which include USHL First All-Star Team – 2006 and USHL All-Rookie Team – 2006 and in 2009 took time out to meet campers at Shibley Day Camp. Making both Long Island and the USA very proud this year, and always, Okposo comes in this year at number three!
