Best Delicatessen on Long Island

by Best Of Long Island on January 9, 2012

Long Island is home to endless delectable delicatessens, each with their own characters behind the counter, happily serving each of their patrons their favorite sandwich, hot plate or cold cut. Only a handful earn the honor of being designated the Best Delicatessen on Long Island. Here are this year’s winners of Best Delicatessen on Long Island.

Long Islanders Voted Iavarone Bros Best Delicatessen on Long Island!

1. Iavarone Bros.

Multiple Locations. www.ibfoods.com

Originating in Brooklyn in 1919, today it’s one of the largest, most highly regarded food companies in New York. Iavarone is not your typical deli by any stretch of the imagination. It is so, so much more. The European-style marketplace offers an extensive array of international and gourmet foods spanning the globe. Fresh seafood, prime meats, fresh fruits and vegetables and imported specialties you simply won’t find anywhere else—Iavarone Bros. is a shopper and foodie’s treasure trove.

2. Joe’s Meat & Gourmet Deli

783 Hillside Ave., New Hyde Park. 516-326-7616. www.joesgourmetdeli.com

Gourmet doesn’t even begin to describe the goodness of Joe’s. From signature sandwiches like the Hitman (grilled chicken on a pita bread with fresh mozzarella, lettuce and tomato smothered in a pesto sauce) to soups like Chicken Tortilla and Cheese (corn tortilla flavor combined with Chipotle peppers, scallions and a creamy Colby Jack cheese), it’s no wonder this is a favorite among Long Islanders!

3. Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen

Multiple Locations. www.bensdeli.net

Ben’s Deli goes above and beyond the call of duty. They cure their own corned beef, offer home delivery, and faithfully observe kosher dietary laws. In addition, Ben’s caters for every occasion, and all the food is freshly made and well known for the gargantuan size proportions.

My favorite deli on LI is central ave. deli in Bethpage. In the summer time when avocados are in season, I have them make me my own personal specialty wrap. I get grilled chicken, jasmine rice, bacon, pineapple, with a little thousand island dressing, on a whole wheat wrap. The owner is also an extremely nice fellow, try to get him to make your food, if you can. He’s a big Russian guy.

My friend owns a deli and his jaw dropped in awe when he first saw and tried Uncle Guiseppes deli. Really should be somewhere on the list…..

Those are not delis. Those are butchers! For a real deli go to North Babylon Deli on Deer Park Avenue, North Babylon. They make their salads and other items fresh daily-unlike other delis. They have great cold cuts, sandwiches and caterings also. Their staff is friendly and efficient. The owner Mike is always ready to pitch in to help his staff and accomodate the customers.
