When Brookville’s LIU Post Pioneers and the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds merged their athletics programs in July of 2019 to create the LIU Sharks, it marked a new era in Long Island University’s storied history of intercollegiate athletics. The two departments combined have produced 23 national championships, 247 conference championships, 377 All-American athletes, and 80 professional draft picks. The women’s ice hockey team added to the legacy in 2020, the LIU Sharks inaugural season, when they defeated the Saint Anselm Hawks 1-0 to win the 2019-2020 NEWHA Conference title. Emerging from two dynasties with such long histories of success, it’s no surprise that the new and improved LIU College Sports program claimed a championship in it’s very first year.

The Adelphi University Athletics program offers a wide selection of basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, track and field and bowling programs to name a few. Their 16 NCAA Division II National Championship titles, 17 NCAA Division II East Regional titles, four Northeast-10 Conference Presidents’ Cups and Countless NCAA Tournament wins distinguish them from the rest of the competition among other major college sports programs on the island. Adelphi’s college sports program is constantly evoking school spirit in its students, alumni and other Panther fans who live for university athletics.

Nobody beats Adelphi when it comes to Long Island’s best collegiate athletic program. Adelphi’s 2017-18 academic year saw its athletics program flourish, highlighted by softball’s Brenda Martini being named Northeast Conference Woman of the Year. The women’s tennis team kept their dominance running, taking their third consecutive NE10 title. Track & Field, Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Soccer, Men’s Golf, and Women’s Tennis all made appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Adelphi Athletics was also recognized for various diversity & inclusion efforts in 2017-18 by LGBT SportSafe for its efforts in creating an LGBTQ-inclusive athletic community. Four student-athletes were honored with CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. Athletes in women’s bowling, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer and softball all won “Player of the Year” in the NE10. Carlo Acquista of men’s soccer and Dennis Kearney of women’s bowling both won Coach of the Year honors.

The NCAA Men’s Basketball team delivered a stunning 62-57 victory over undefeated and No. 13 Washington in Seattle in December, giving the program its biggest win since beating Penn State in 2006 and the conference’s first win over a ranked opponent in 10 seasons! Head football coach Chuck Priore was named one of five finalists for the Rare Disease Champion Award on behalf of Joey Feminella, a child battling brain cancer who was adopted by the Stony Brook football team. With their combined heart and athletic prowess, SBU is a college Long Islanders are immensely proud of, and that pride is reflected in the Seawolves’ sportsmanship and truly inspiring athletic acumen!
